Having fun with your kids doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, it doesn’t have to cost a dime! The following activities are either free (the best kind) or extremely inexpensive.
- Fire departments usually allow kids to come in and check everything out - simply call your local department and ask when you can come in! Kids have a blast walking around, seeing fireman’s poles, and checking out the huge trucks. They’ll be able to talk to the firefighters on duty and learn all about what they do on a daily basis.
- Most museums in the United States have a “free day” once a month as a service to the community. If you live near a museum, take this opportunity to bond with your kids and learn something at the same time!
- Many communities have a dollar theater; although the movies aren’t brand-new, going to the show is a fun excursion for a child. Unfortunately, the concessions are often priced the same as they are at the huge mega-theaters, so plan accordingly.
- Have a treasure hunt. Make a list of things for you and your little one to look for while you’re out running errands together, such as “building with no windows,” “lady wearing a blue shirt,” and “empty newspaper stand.” As your child carries the checklist, you can get your tasks finished; wrap everything up with an ice cream cone on the way home.
- Libraries offer story time and craft time activities for children. Your child can meet other kids, listen to great stories read by a librarian, and check out a book to take home afterward!
- Many National and State Parks have playgrounds, petting farms, and wildlife sanctuaries. Take your child in the woods and explore! The only cost involved is that of the day pass to get in the park - usually under $5. Bring a picnic lunch and some extra water bottles and you’ve got an entire day of activities.
These tried-and-true activities will bring a smile to any child’s face; the best part about it is that you’re spending time together and creating memories your little one will have forever.
