This morning while watching the news I came across a sad story of weight discrimination. An overweight husband and his wife were attempting to adopt a 2 month old family member. However, the courts decided against the couple indicating that the father could die well before the child was older.
I understand that during the adoption process the health of the potential parents needs to be considered, but in this is outright discrimination. The couple's state has considered the couple fit and healthy enough to be foster parents and they have been for years, but all of the sudden the couple isn't fit to care for a child.
What next? Is the government going to discriminate against the potential parents because they are not the same race as the child?
With all the homeless children and so few adopting parents we are in no position to make it more difficult. Yes, the government needs to make sure the children are going to loving homes, but weight is not a legitimate reason to deny potential parents, especially when the state has already indicated, by giving them couple foster children, that they are fit to raise children.
I agree with the process of an overall health screening for potential parents because yes, they could die well before the child is an adult, but so could any parent.
