(contd.)

Install Internet Filters

Installing Internet filters will assist parents in regulating what types of websites that the parent will allow their children to visit and will filter out most of the websites that are not allowed by the parent. These filters can be set to block adult websites and gambling websites and/or any website that the parents do not approve of and do not want their children having access to.

Report Anyone That:

  1. Sends inappropriate emails or photos to your child
  2. Engages in any sexually explicit dialog with your child
  3. Engages in any inappropriate web cam or VOIP with your child.

If an online stranger is engaging in any of these behaviors with a child, then it should be reported to the Internet Service Provider, the FBI and the social network that the predator may have originally met the child on. Do not just let it go and not report the predator, because he/she will just move on to find a new victim and could you live with knowing that you had the chance to stopping them, before they could victimize another child?

Cyberpatrol

CyberPatrol is one of the most powerful and popular client-based Internet safety programs available to parents today. For less than $25.00 per year, this software can give parents the power to control everything that their child is allowed to do on the Internet, plus it offers a host of valuable tools which will allow the parents to block websites, chats and email that isn't allowed. Parents can set Internet schedule times, record chat logs, save and view websites that the child has been visiting and report illegal activity more easily. Of course, this is only a few features of the software and there is much more that this article doesn't address, but you can checkout the information and features of CyberPatrol Software on their website and see if this software is right for you.

Kidzui

Kidzui is a child safe search engine that pre-approves all of the websites that is added to their search engine by parents and teachers with protecting kids safety first on their list. This search engine has hundreds of thousands of pre-approved websites that are safe for children of all ages to visit and gives the parents a sense of knowing that when their children are surfing at Kidzui they are not going to accidentally stumble upon adult or gambling websites that could be potentially harmful to the child.

Remember, to take the time to talk and listen to your child at lease once a day, because online predators are looking to do the talking and listening that the parents are neglecting to provide their child. A talk per day could keep the online predators away from your child today!

I am 16 and think that taking precautionary measures can be very helpful but also harmful to a parent’s relationship with their teenager if it involves invading their privacy (reading emails, demanding passwords, etc). Depending on the situation, putting your computer under lock and key may unknowingly encourage your teenager to rebel and operate on the internet secretly, and possibly unsafely, at a different location. The blog I write for (OnTeensToday.com—where parents get advice from a teen’s perspective) also has an article about online safety and protection for your children called 10 Ways to Protect Your Kids Against Identity Theft. It might add a fresh point of view to the mix. Please feel free to check it out:
