Alternatives to Naming a Baby After Her Mother

Do you want to name your child after her mother, but feel that it is a little bit strange? Here are some alternatives to giving a baby her mother's name.

Fathers often dream of naming their sons after them. This is easy enough to do, as "Jr." is all that needs to be added to the child's name. What about when a mother wants to name her daughter after herself, however? Is this possible to do, since you cannot add a title such as "Jr." to the end of your daughter's name? Giving a daughter the same exact name as her mother seems a little bit unusual and can cause a lot of confusion to occur. What other options are available? Here are some suggestions on how to name a child after her mother.

Use the Name as a Middle Name

One of the easiest ways to name a child after her mother is to use the name as a middle name. Although this gives the child a touch of her mother, she will not have the same exact name as her mother, which would probably make things quite confusing in the long run. While some people do not realize it, this is really very common for women to do.

Use the Mother's Maiden Name

Giving a child her mother's maiden name is another great way to name a child after her mother. Of course, do keep in mind that this will not work in every single case, depending on what the mother's maiden name is. If your maiden name is a name which can be used as a first name, such as Stacy or Taylor, then it will work. Also keep in mind that you can use variations of the last name. For example, Summers can be turned into Summer, while Roberts can be turned into Roberta.

Use a Similar Name as the First Name

A great way to name your daughter after her mother but also keep her name unique is to choose a name which is very similar to it. For example, if your first name is Alex, you may want to name your daughter Alexandria, Alexis or Alexia. If your first name is Alyssa, you may want to name your daughter Alyce, Alicia, Mellissa or Karissa. Not only will the name be similar to the mother's name, but it will also help ensure that they feel like an individual with their own name.

As you can see, there are many different options available for women who want to name their daughters after them. Although it is possible for you to just give your daughter the same exact name that you have, it is probably a much better idea to give her a name which has a special meaning or is very similar, yet different at the same time.
