How to Make Your Home Smell Like Christmas

It’s easy to get holiday scents inside your house.

You can buy scented candles and burn them, or use specially mixed oils in a diffuser. You can also buy potpourris with special Christmas scents and leave them in bowls around the house, mixing every once in a while to refresh the scent. But there's a deliciously simple home-made way to make your house smell like Christmas.

During the Holiday period, whenever you eat an apple or orange, or when you squeeze a lemon, put the various peelings in a pan, alone or mixed together, cover with water, add a cinnamon stick, and one or two cloves, and bring it to the boil. Then turn down the heat and simmer. You can also add a piece of ginger and some cardamom seeds for extra tones.

Keep this potion simmering all day, topping it up with boiling water whenever it looks as if it's going to run dry, and you house will greet you and your guests with a deliciously Christmassy aroma.

Wonderful idea, Dee. I burn vanilla scented candle and the kids ask: "Where are the cookies?"

Icy, that's so cute.
Ruby, you're right, it definitely does smell like Christmas.
Today I put some on to simmer, and turned it off when i went out. I came home hours later, and as I walked in through the door the house smelled lovely - just like Christmas. Now all I need is to put some carols on, light the Christmas tree....

What wonderful ideas! I love coming home and having it smell
of great scents. I very much like Icy\'s cookie scent idea, home baking makes a home smell so warm and inviting, especially at the Holidays.

What a simple and inexpensive way to scent your house for Christmas! And it's nutritious, too, if you are eating the orange or apple. (Sorry, can't imagine eating a lemon!)
