Prepare You Vehicle for Winter Driving

Learn the basics on vehicle preventative maintenance in winter weather and conditions.

Winter is coming, icy roads are inevitable and snow will be flying. It's time to get your vehicles ready for the weather and road conditions. Don't let unpredictable weather halt your travels and plans. By following these easy tips you can be prepared for whatever weather comes you way.

  • Test your engine coolant. Look to see that the temperature is good- a minus 30-degree reading is good as compared to a 0-degree reading. Replacing coolant should be considered. Antifreeze will breakdown and needs to be tested and possibly replaced.
  • Battery and charging system. Make sure the terminals are clean and have a mechanic check the amps and volts.
  • Windshield wiper-washer system. Make sure the wiper blades are touching the windshield. Replace if worn. Do not dilute the solvent. Use it straight from the gallon container.
  • Headlights. Make sure the aim is proper. Misdirected lights on snow-covered roads can affect vision. Headlights just don't burn out; they lose their brightness over the course of time. Check them in a dark garage and make sure they're equal in brightness.
  • Tires. Good treading and proper air pressure are important- and forgotten frequently. Keep tires inflated to manufacturer's recommendation.
  • Brakes. Check fluid, make sure all components are in good working condition and are not worn too much.
  • Check your serpentine belt and make sure there's no cracks and that the tension is proper

One final note, keep an emergency prepared kit in the vehicle. Keep a blanket, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, an extra jacket, your cell phone and flares inside.

This is something I normally leave to the mechanic but lately with the hectic lifestyle we have I had forgotten about these preparations. Getting all these items taken care is important and I think we tend to forget about our car and its maintenance. Thank you

This really helps me out. I was in a car accident last winter and my car slipped on the ice, with the combination of the icy road and my worn out tires, it might of prevented it from happening. And with the wiper fluids, it will help because of all the salt that gets laid on the road, it sticks to the windows, making it very difficult to see out of. I also should have a emergency kit in my trunk, because you never know what could happen.
