How to Survive a HURRICANE

Natural disasters hit without warning. These are some tips on being prepared in case one is headed your way.

If you ever have experienced a  natural disaster such as a major flood or a terrible life-threating tornado or a hurricaine , you know what usually follows such as black-outs and water and phone lines  that will need repair .Until help arrives and sometimes this takes days , if the family was not prepared for this type of emergency , it can really get bad. So, in order to weather a disaster again, think of it as camping out in your own home with the right necessities.

  1. Foods that can be eaten with little or no preparation

These include peanut butter, whole-grains crackers, plenty of baby food, powered milk and cold cereal .
  2. Several gallons of water

Buy up several bottles at grocery store.I usually freeze up some water in empty cola bottles also.
  3. Don't forget about your pet

Keeping water and food supply readyon hand for our little pets .
  4. A First-Aid- kit  is a must

Keeping a first-aid kit on hand with scissors ,needles, thread, and medications for different things such as an antibiotic cream, tyenol, current meds that family is taking such as a diabetic needs certain supplies for emergencies.Kits can be purchased from the AMERICAN  RED CROSS , camping shops or other places such as walmarts usually have this kind of things .Always personalize your own kit with the other medications your family might need.
  5. Lights light the way

Flashlights with plenty of batteries stored separately so they will stay fresh and ready to go if needed. In bad weather , you never know when a black-out is coming. Candles and laterns are good to have handy also.
  6. Always keep cash on hand

Banks and automatic teller machines will not be in working order.
  7. Try and keep a extra pair of eye glasses~

This is really a good idea anytime, when you can't find one, you will have another pair on hand!

  8. Always keep a full or nearly full tank of gas in your  transportation.

This would really be sad to experience seeing a empty gas gauge while trying to escape from danger or trying to get help. it is advised to never store gasoline outside of your car tank.
  9. Keeping your important papers and documents in safe place

Since disasters often destoys our homes and their contents, storing copies of important documents and vital info with a trusted friends, family or a bank deposit box.

A copy of your insurance policies and phone numbers of your agents, your attorney's name and numbers, a list of health problems with all medications list, and your doctor's phone numbers, the location of your safe deposit box and an extra keys. Asking family members outside of town would be a good idea.
  10. Disaster Training

Some people prefer to get diaster training because it really helps the whole family in case of injury and it also builds up confidence that can be vital in getting you through a tough time such as a natural disater.Families should make their own plan to evacuate in case of fire or other cases and practice this often so you will know the plan in case something do happen.

  11. Install smoke alarms and sprinklers

Most insurance companies often lowers their rates on homes with these installed also these are very important to have.
  12. Keeping fire extinguishers in appropriate places around the house!

These will really be handy in case of fire.
  13. Store towels ,water, and a rope ladder

Keeping these items close to your bed in case of fire can help you escape time by soaking towels in water and stuffing under doors to block incoming smoke .Always try and sleep with the door closed.
  14. Know how to shut off water pipes , electricity, and gas lines

So if you suspect any problems it will be a safer place.

Neighborhood disater organizations will help whose members can come to each other's aid and in the event of an emergency.Always working as a team, neighbors can help save lives and homes. Many residents have equipment and skills that can be invaluable in a disaster.Pinning large colorful ribbons on your door or other places to signal you need help after a bad storm can help volunteers to see you better. Keeping a video or pictures of your home in a safe place will help put a price on your home and items you had so they might can be replaced by insurance.  Hopefully disaster won't hit, but we have to be prepared in case it does.
