Getting Your Car Ready for Winter

Living smack dab in the middle of West Virginia when the chill hits the air, your mind goes straight to getting things ready for winter. Since we live in a part of the state where public transportation is scarce we depend on our 1997 Plymouth Neon all winter long. Just like every car it needs a few things taken care of before the snow hits.

Good tires are a must. That means checking the tread an easy and cheapest way to do this is, stick a penny in the tread heads up if you can see Lincoln you better start thinking’ about getting new tires. If your tires are good check the PSI and keep it at what your owners manual suggest. It will help with gas mileage also.

Change the oil it is about 30.00 to have a shop change it. If you choose to change it yourself like we do make sure you properly dispose of the old oil. I suggest checking all your cars fluids and changing the air filter also.

Make sure you have plenty of washer fluid I like the kind that is also a deicer in the winter. It cost a little more but is well worth it.

Along with a windshield scraper and brush keep a couple cans of deicer on hand to deal with frozen car doors and locks ( just don’t keep it in the car ). They even have small cans that fit in your purse or brief case.

Make an emergency kit for your car. Remember anything can happen at anytime and luck favors the prepared.

Your kit should include:

Jumper cables you can get really nice kits with cables, flares, and a tire pump at Wal Mart

Rode Flares

A Flashlight

I always try to keep a small first aid kit in my glove box or console.

A Heavy Blanket

A Change of clothes incase you have car trouble get wet and may be stranded in the snow for a while.

If you have kids keep a few snack items and travel games on hand also.

Yes this one may sound crazy but a small bag of cat litter in case you would get hung up put some in front of your tire and it will help you catch traction and increase your chances of getting out.

A few other small tips check all your cars’ fluids and the PSI every time you fill up your car. Try to keep your car as close to full as you can it gives your car extra weight and if you are stuck in a storm it will allow you to run your heater and not run out of gas.

Please remember it is a bad idea to run your car for long periods of time in this situation. Cars put off carbon monoxide and the fumes can build up in the car so when you are running the heater crack a window for some fresh air. Drive safely, try to be prepared and keep your cool if something does happen. Most of all when the roads are bad if you do not have to travel, it is best to just stay home and keep the roads clear of traffic for the state roads to get clear fo . r travel
