20 Ways to Making Your Home Child Safe

Make your home safe for small children.

  1. Keep child out of reach of all low cabinets or apply childproof locks.
  2. Move all chemicals and harmful substances to an elevated area.
  3. Put childproof locks an all low cabinets, drawers etc.
  4. Never takes your eyes off the child when left in unsafe circumstances; on the stairs, in the bathtub, in the garage.
  5. When cooking, never have the pot handle sticking out where the child can grab it.
  6. Install smoke alarms on all level of your house, including: bedrooms, kitchen, living room.
  7. Install covers over all electrical outlets and have wires hidden.
  8. Have a list of emergency phone numbers close to the phone in case of emergencies such as fires, allergies and poison.
  9. Remove poisonous plants from home and garden.
  10. Fill in holes, fix fences, and fix loose floorboards.
  11. Make sure there are no jagged edges or corners.
  12. Keep children away when using tools such as lawn mowers.
  13. Always have a first aid kit.
  14. Make sure safety belts are properly fastened..
  15. Use safety gates to keep children out of unsafe locations such as the stairs, balcony, kitchen and bathroom.
  16. Make sure to cover up or tightly screw floor vents, children could be burned or electrocuted.
  17. Use door knobs covers or licks to prevent children wandering into unsafe locations.
  18. Use strong safety netting on windows or balconies.
  19. Use corner and edge bumpers on furniture, cabinets, wall corners.
  20. Get a cordless phone to be able to continuously watch your child.
