www.instructables.com is by far one of the biggest, best, and most popular sites for the DIYer. They often offer different contest that you can enter and win stuff. They have a great little community and people offer advice and help. If you know what you want such as POV, or a hydroponics system then you can search for it in the search box. If you are just looking for something to inspire you or to give you a good weekend project you can search the sites various sections such as food, games, pet, etc.
Similar to instructables is Makezine.com. Makezine has a magazine that you can order as well and the magazines are great and offer tons of fun projects to build. The site offers projects you can build yourself. You can search by category as well. One problem with the site is none of the articles are on the site they connect to the original site for the information.
Some other good online sites for the DIY enthusiast are, hackedgadgets.com, and lifehacker.com. If you have particular interest such as robots, or hydroponics then you should search google for those particular interest as sites dedicated to a particular field will have more information then sites that do not have one main focus.
There are some great books that you can get. If you cannot afford the books you can always check your local library, the library should have at least some of these books.
The Evil Genius guides are great. They have many and continue to bring out more and more. Some of the fun guides they have are electronics, electronic games, video games, mechatronics, and solar project books. These books are a DIY dream.
