This is a short guide to help you with your system before you call an expert to fix your A/C and or heater.
- When your system stops working, the first thing to do is check the power. Go to the circuit breaker box and open it. Look for a label of A/C and trip it off and on three or four times. Also, while you are there look for another circuit breaker labeled Furnace or FAU and trip that one as well. Depending on your particular set up will determine if you have one or both of these breakers.
- If you have found the breakers and tripped them both but still no power. Check the outdoor condensing unit fuses and disconnect for power. There should be a set of 2 fuses if you open the disconnect box and pull the handle out. Your unit may or may not have a disconnect so keep this in mind. Also you could have one with no fuses or an on off handle. Either way check out the system and get to know it a little bit better. If you have fuses, replace them at the hardware store and try again.
- If you have power but no cold air, check your filter and replace it right away. A system could freeze up and shut down the compressor due to a dirty filter not allowing sufficient air to cross the cold coil.
These are things that you can do yourself to try to save a $400 service call. If the unit is damaged in any major way, be sure to get 3 or 4 opinions and do not tell them what the others told you. Ask for free estimates to repair the system. If you still can not decide what to do, you can go to anthonystvchannel.com

Always remember to be cautious when around electrical circuits, panels, and disconnects. Be alert and aware of what you are doing. There is no guarantee that you will fix the system on your own, but the chances are very strong that you may.
