The Ingredients
The basic ingredient in bath salts is old fashioned Epson salts. You can find Epson salt at any drug store and many grocery stores. It is very inexpensive. The other ingredients are:
- Essential oils: Any scent you like, this is a matter of taste. I love rose, lavender and orange blossom.
- Natural food coloring: You should not scrimp on this, buy a good quality food based coloring.
Mixing:
For a basic batch start with two cups of salt, three drops of oil and two drops of color. Place in a zipper bag and smoosh the bag. I have found this mixes better than in a bowl. Be sure to mix until al the coloring is absorbed. The color will not stain in the bath if you use the small amount recommended.
Packaging:
The salts must be stored in an airtight container or it will clump together. There are great bottles in most dollar stores or use canning jars. The jar can make a big difference in how good a gift this makes. Use your imagination. I attach a tag to the jar with twine to dress it up. Include directions and your name in the tag to show that it was made by you.
Use:
One to two tablespoons added to the bath water as the tub is filling then enjoy the soak.
Living naturally is good for you and for our planet. This small thing, added with other small things can make our lives better.
