Make Your Own Mosquito Repellents at Home

Many commercial products contain dangerous and toxic chemicals such as Deet. Now you can make your own mosquito repellents using herbs and essential oils at home.

Lemon eucalyptus, soy bean, geranium, citronella, fennel, celery, Neem, thyme, clove, penny royal, tansy, lavender, witch hazel and fever few are the common useful mosquito repellents.

You can buy the essential oils and mix with herbs so that you can use them as mosquito repellents. Or you can prepare them at home. While preparing at home you have to take some precautions.

Precautions While Preparing Mosquito Repellent Oils:

  1. Follow the guidelines mentioned strictly regarding quantity
  2. Open the windows or use exhaust fan in the kitchen as some oils may cause strong odors
  3. Prepare these oils when the children are not at home
  4. Don't prepare thyme oil repellent at home as it is too irritating and strong-smelling to be used at effective concentrations above 25%
  5. Clove oil should not be applied undiluted to skin as a homemade repellent

There are Three Methods for Preparing Mosquito Repellent Oils.

  1. Pick the required fresh herb. Remove any dirt and set them in a sunny place until the herb is wilted. For better mosquito repellent oil use more than one herb in equal quantity. Place the herb or herbs into a crock pot. For half cup herbs pour a cup olive oil. Turn the crock pot on low temperature and heat the herbs for 2 to 3 hours. Then cool it and strain the oil through cheesecloth. Squeeze as much oil as you can.
  2. Place the herb or herbs in a clean glass jar and pour olive oil on it (measurement is just as above) and set it in the sun for a week days. Shake it once a day. After a week squeeze the oil using the cheesecloth. For each 25 ml of herbal essential oil add 1 ml of citronella oil or tea tree oil.
  3. Infuse the required herb in spirit or rubbing alcohol for 2 to 3 days. Mix the infusions of three or four herbs for better repellent and fill this in a spray bottle.

Some More Ways for Preparation of Mosquito Repellent Oils:

  1. Take a cup of fresh basil leaves, a cup of Neem leaves and a cup of lavender. Let them dry. Make a fine powder. Now add olive oil to it. Apply the paste to the exposed parts of the body to repel mosquitoes.
  2. Take equal parts of soy bean oil, geranium oil and coconut oil. Mix thoroughly. Fill this solution in a spray bottle and use as a mosquito repellent.
  3. Put 50ml of olive oil and 5ml of citronella essential oil in a spray bottle. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Mix 50g of celery extract and 10ml of neem essential oil thoroughly. It is a powerful mosquito repellent that does not irritate skin.
  5. Take one part of lavender extract and one part of fennel extract. Mix these ingredients with 10ml of lemon eucalyptus.
  6. Put 50g of witch hazel in a bottle. Add 5ml of citronella essential oil and mix thoroughly.
  7. Take equal parts of rosemary leaves and eucalyptus leaves. Let them dry and make fine powder. Make it fine paste by adding Neem oil.
