NOTE : If you are scared of spiders or don't like going to your crawlspace or attic hire a professional !! If you are concerned about your well being Hire a Professional!!
First Thing's First
Before you invest the time and money in to do it yourself spider control I must tell you if you have Brown Recuse spiders the probability of 100% elimination is very low if not impossible. But you can reduce the population to little to no sightings.
Identification
It is imperative that you are positive you have Brown Recluse infesting your home. The best way is to catch one or trap one on a sticky trap take it to your local pest control company and ask them to identify it. I cant emphasis it enough to have it identified by a professional. Most companies do this for free. To confirm their identification just Google under the images tab and look at a good picture of this spider.
Inspection
How bad is the infestation? To answer this question lets use a couple tools first a flashlight and a ton of flat mouse glue traps, not the back tray kind but the thin paper flat ones. Pull the wax paper off the back of the trap and place it flat glue side up next to the wall. Put these traps under things, in corners, in crawl space and attic. Don't forget garage and basement. These spiders and called recluse for a reason, the don't like to be were you are. So, go to places you don't frequent to often and place traps out. Put out as many as you can afford to buy, the average home you cold easily put 20-30 traps.
Take your flashlight and inspect the crawl space, your not just looking for spiders but a web mass. This web mass looks like white steel wool pulled apart. It is not like a typical spiders web, it is a mis mash of unorganized webbings. This webbing is an indication of nesting location and is a sign of infestation.
You also need to be looking for sheds or molts of the spider. A Brown Recluse molt actually looks like a real live spider at first glance. If you will just blow in the direction of the molt it will just sway in the breeze, if it docent move then you may be seeing a real live spider not hollow cast off skin molt. Also inspect the garage, attic and outbuildings for the same activity as mentioned above.
After a couple of weeks have passed check you traps, if you have a few spiders , say maybe one per board the possibility of treating this low population level is bad, if you have many spiders per trap then maybe we can make a dent in the population.
Treatment
Traps are a great way to reduce the population without pesticide application. Place as many flat, thin, mouse pad traps as you can everywhere. You will be amazed at how just placing out traps and changing them every month will make a huge difference. If you want a temporary quick solution in the adult population you may opt to fog your crawlspace and attic. Just buy several boxes of foggers that are labeled for indoor use. Follow the directions. Always follow the label. You may get a respirator that is codded for pesticides. Then place a can in each section of your crawlspace. Divided your crawlspace into quarters and put a can in each quarter. Treat the attic the same way to fog it as well. This will make a big impact in the adult population. The traps will help to eliminate the rest of them. You also may choose to spay a liquid or a dust in your home. Look for products that will kill spiders for indoor use and follow label directions.
Follow Up Treatment
You will see a reduced population after several months of treating with any or all the applications above. Continue the application according to the label and rest assured you will gain reduced population in a few months.
