How to Refill a Disposable Lighter

This step by step guide will allow you to refill disposable lighters without needing to chuck them away.

To refill a disposable lighter you may need the following:

  • A disposable lighter
  • lighter refill fluid
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Something thin at one end (some pens work perfectly)

To start with great care must be taken when taking the lighter apart as no parts should be lost. If any parts are lost your lighter may fail to work.

  1. Remove the metal casing around the top of the lighter
  2. Cover the top of the lighter with your hand and remove the sparking wheel. (WARNING! parts may spring out!)
  3. Remove the button attached to the gas valve.
  4. Remove the adjusting ring attached to the gas valve
  5. Use pliers to undo the valve so that it can be taken out
  6. Remove the tube that is under the valve.
  7. Fill the lighter with gas
  8. Place the tube back into the lighter and place any covering parts back where they where
  9. Screw in the valve using the pliers until you are happy with how far out it rises.
  10. Re-attach the button to the valve.
  11. Ensure the spring under the sparking wheel is still there and use the pliers to hold the flint firmly.
  12. push the flint onto the spring and use the pen (or other item) to hold it in position
  13. Replace the sparking wheel above the flint and make sure it is back in firmly
  14. replace the metal cover and test that the lighter works

If no parts have been lost the lighter will have been successfully refilled. Be careful with the flint as this can easily be fired off in random directions.

this is stupid. How do you propose we do step # 7 when butane is a gas at room temperature?

You are saying to refill a butane lighter with lighter fluid? It will not work unless you add a wick, but you have converted it, NOT refilled it with butane gas.

Styx (The guy who wrote this how to refill a lighter), his mother must have been gangraped by gorillas to have produced such a retard like he is. This confirms he's a loser.

To ALL negative comments above and below, These steps DO work! As long as you have common sense. The butane is liquid. It turns to a gas when it decompresses\expands. When filling the lighter as instructed, the butane will remain a liquid as it is filled. By reassembling the lighter immediatly after filling you prevent the butane from turning to a gas. You will notice your lighter is cold. In fact, the butane can reach -65 degrees F and colder if it is allowed to evaporate on it's own. Worried about the pressure??... Don't be. The pressure builds slower than you would think. You will have time to put the hose and valve back in. Just don't procrastinate or butane will evaporate completely. I have been refilling disposable lighters this way for 13 years now. Cheaper lighters are easier to refill than say a Bic. Bic lighters have a removable valve but the tube is WELL sealed.

This does work (although it can get pretty annoying and I don't like chances of gas leaks, smell, broken parts, etc). Considering disposable lighters are usually fairly cheap, I would rather buy another lighter rather than put down money for a butane refiller and go through this process. If you're this into refilling and maintaining a disposable lighter, a wick lighter (ie. Zippo steel wick lighters) may be the best option for you. It won't break, is much better quality, and is far nicer to use in my opinion. If you have a metal butane lighter and either: want to hold on to it for personal reasons or prefer these lighters; then go for it. My 2 cents.
