How to Raise a Goldfish

If you want to raise your goldfish but don't know how, this is the key. This is the step-by-step guide to raise goldfish.

Getting Started

Goldfish are delicate and get injured easily if not cared, this guide will help you raise your goldfish from Common to Red Caps. For simple goldfish raising, you will need the following things:

  • Glass fish bowl/fish tank
  • fish food
  • artificial/real freshwater plants (optional)
  • Fish medicine (optional but recommended as they are delicate)
  • A bucket for changing water
  • And most importantly, a goldfish/es.

There are more optional fish keeping tools that will make your fish more happier:

  • Water filter
  • Fish net
  • Gravel to hide the fish waste from accidently being eaten
  • Hiding places such as sunken ships and broken jugs
  • Water ager and metal netruelizer
  • And freshwater PH level regulator
  • Air pump

Setting up a new home for a goldfish/es

Step 1. Fill up your fish tank/bowl with tap water and leave it there for two days (unless you have a water ager and metal netruelizer)

Step 2. put you plants and hiding places for the goldfish. This is also the time to put in other items such as Water filter and air pump, and to add the PH level regulater and Water ager and stuff like that

Step 3. Go to the goldfish shop and buy the number of goldfish you prefer.

Step 4. Put the fishes gently into the fish bowl/tank (use a net or just use a bucket to scoop the fish into the bowl/tank

Step 5. Give the goldfish some of your fish food, 1/8 of a teaspoon of food per goldfish.

After that, you can sit back, relax as you watch your goldfish explore its new home.

Changing the goldfish water

If you don't have a water filter, change at least 50% of the water, make sure you have left that new water for 2 days or used PH level regulator, metal remover and water ager.

Use your bucket to change the water.

Owners of goldfish who also has a filter in operation in the tank needs to change it once every 5 days.

Cleaning

The fish bowl/tank will need cleaning once every month, including the ones with filters Algae and slime also grows in the tank and if not cleaned, the whole tank will be covered in it.

First remove the goldfish and put it into the bucket, then empty the bowl/tank and when emptied, clean it with a sponge or a scrub, or anything which has bristles, be sure that its cleaned.

Breeding

If you have 2 or more goldfish, one male and one female, they may mate and lay eggs in spring, several days before that happens, the male chases the female. When laying the eggs, the male pushes the famale to a plant and start spawning the eggs, spawning can take place for 2-3 hours.

Once finished, the parents of the eggs will eat as many eggs as they can find, so its best to separate the eggs from their parents after spawning.

Raising baby goldfish

Baby goldfish are called fry, they born in the colours of brown and black to hide from the bigger goldfish, as the bigger ones eat them. Raise them seperately from the adult fish and feed them small flakes of fish food, until they are a year old. You will need to raise them for several months until they get their adult colours, once those colours are fully gained, they are ready to be with the big goldfish.

Conclusion

So now you won't be bored because the goldfish will etertain you, as long as you repay them by taking care of them.

I have 4 goldfish in a large bowl with a large plant. The fish have twice had babies. I would love to raise them but seem to find the babies to late. How can I tell when they are born to remove them from the tank?

Lala, the fish eggs are to be removed immediately after the fish has finished laying them, the fry are so small that they can be eaten by adult fish. The fries are to be fed flake fish food

I apologise that i don't know about sucker fish, i mainly keep my studies to common pets. Sorry :(
#13 by lola, Feb 15, 2008
do the fish eggs eat fish food?
#14 by Dear Lola, Feb 19, 2008
No, fish eggs do not eat food! They're still in eggs! (Obviously)
So don't worry. Just make sure the eggs are somewhere that does not contain adult fish and make sure the tank your putting the eggs in is filtered by a weak powered filter and water free of clourine and chromium. Go to a fish shop to ask how...
And by the way, leave the fry fish alone from being fed by you for 48 hrs, because they can just eat their egg yolk after they hatch. Also feed them live and very small brine shrimps and/or crushed fish flake food (Reccomended to feed both)

Hope that solves your problems!

how can you tell males from females in goldfish?
#19 by reply to messages no. 17 and 18, May 22, 2008
Dear Zippy,
Well done on your eggs, just make sure you take good care of them, meaning that you should pay attention.
Dear Blue,
female fish are fatter because of the developing eggs they hold.
Only an overweight male fish can resemble a female.

Dear Mashfiq
I am sorry for you that you have lost your fry. But here are some tips to help make sure your fry are healthy and living.
Firstly, one of the main causes for fry death other than fish eating fish is that some eggs may be unfertilized. Fertilized eggs are very clear and a bit see through. Unfertilized eggs are darker and not see through. Sadly, the unfertilized eggs have to go. Though there is a chance the unfertilized may survive. If you can, seperate them in small groups, depending wether they're darker or lighter. If you can't, then humanely, leave them to die.
And another cause that the fry may die is lack of care. Unlike adult fish, they need constant care and enough space for them to swim in. Fry do eat the eggs they hatched out, but 48 hours later, it's all gone, and it's up to you to feed the fry very small sized food. This may include crushed flake food and/or crushed unseasoned boiled egg.
Good luck raising your next group of fry.
