Do you have wicker furniture that could use a cosmetic face lift? If your wicker furniture is looking a bit dated and weary, why not give it a whole new look with a fresh coat of paint in an entirely different shade? It's quick and easier than you think to paint wicker. You can paint wicker furniture to match the décor of any room in your house. You're limited only by your imagination. Here's how to paint wicker:
Supplies needed to paint wicker:
- Sandpaper
- Dry towels
- Newspaper
- Ventilator mask
- Dust mask
- Primer
- Spray paint designed for outdoor wear.
How to paint wicker:
- Prepare your wicker piece for the paint.
- Begin by laying your newspaper down to protect the area from paint. Choose an outdoor area with good ventilation.
- Place your piece of wicker furniture on top of your newspapers.
- Using your dry towel, thoroughly dust the piece of wicker furniture to prepare it to be painted.
- Sand your piece if it's been previously painted.
If the piece you'll be painting has had a finish or coat of paint previously applied, lightly sand the surface of your wicker piece to remove the previous layers. A lightly sanding is useful in any case to allow the paint to adhere better to the furniture. Be sure to wear a dust mask to avoid inhaling any debris into your lungs.
Spray paint your wicker.
- Before starting, put on your ventilator mask to protect yourself from spray paint fumes.
- Be sure you're using a spray paint designed for outdoor wicker furniture.
- You may want to apply a primer before spray painting, although this isn't necessary if you're using a paint designed for outdoor wicker.
- Lightly apply your first coat of spray paint and allow it to dry for at least twenty minutes.
Don't apply your coats in too heavy a manner to avoid unsightly paint drips.- Repeat the process, spraying at different angles and making sure to cover the corners, nooks, and crannies.
- Allow the paint to dry thoroughly between coats.
- Once you've painted the wicker on top, flip your piece over and do the underside in the same manner.
Most furniture pieces will require three to four coats of paint. Once your paint is completely dry, your wicker furniture piece is ready to be displayed.
