Are you looking to make a scrapbook, but don't have the money to spend on all the different books, pages, decorations, pens, etc? Do you want to make a scrapbook with your children? Do you want to make a scrapbook that is purely your own? Then I have the solution for you. I used this method to make scrapbooks for my high school graduation and have continued to make/add to them.
The basic materials are a 3-ring binder (I suggest at least a 1½ to 2 inch binder) sheet protectors (the clear ones work best) colored paper that will fit in the protectors (colored printer paper works better than construction) pens, markers, colored pencils (you don't need to get any special ones, Crayola markers and/or Sharpies work fine) and whatever materials you want to put into the scrapbook.
Basically the best way to start out is to lay out all the stuff you want to put in your scrapbook and sort through it, deciding what you want to put together, what you want to comment about on the pages. Then, if there are any pictures you want to put in, I strongly recommend making copies, just in case, also make copies of any documents/stories/news clippings, and keep them in a safe place, again, just in case.
Once you have sorted through your items go ahead and get your materials ready - lay out your paper and pens/markers and scissors/tape/glue - whatever you will want handy as you are working. Once you have everything set out, sorted, and ready to go, start putting your scrapbook together.
You can set up your pages, pictures, words, decorations, everything however you want to. Cut out words and sayings from magazines to use as embellishments instead of expensive stickers. Put anything you can think of that will fit in the sheet protector on the pages.
Stickers, tickets, receipts, small souvenirs, coins, buttons, whatever you want to remember and share with others. Write little stories and comments on the pages next to your mementos. Add extra designs with contrasting paper to make your pictures or comments pop.
If you want to include your children or grandchildren or whomever, let them help design pages. Have them draw designs to use in place of stickers or what not. Let them design a page or series of pages all about them.
The biggest thing here is to simply make your scrapbooks your own. Don't make it so other people will know why you did it. Make it for you. It doesn't matter if your sister doesn't understand why you have a penny you found in your scrapbook.
If you know the story behind it and it's meaningful to you, put it in. Don't limit yourself to what others think should be in a scrapbook. Put what you want in there. It's truly yours.
