Have you ever been stuck outside in the winter and needed a shelter to keep you warm? Or if you have you ever wanted to sleep outside and don't have a tent, this essay may be able to help. Using only your surroundings and a few simple tools you could have a life saving shelter! Or you can make a little home for a wild rabbit. Good idea hey, lets get started!
Before you start you will need a few things. This is including a good winter coat, toque, mitts and winter boots. You will also need a lot of energy and a good shovel. Then for the area you will need it to have it in an open space with lots of snow and a good view of the sun. Don't forget you also need about 25-45 sticks about one foot long, these will need to be about the same size.
Here starts the part you will need to pay close attention to. First get out your shovel and pile up the snow in the desired area. A good technique to use is to throw the snow up in the air so it evenly falls on the top of the pile using your shovel. After that when you have a snow pile about three feet high pat the snow in so it is packed firmly. Especially pack it up at the bottom this is the base of the igloo.
When you have packed it in resume piling the snow until it is as high or higher than you (about 5-6 feet). Then pack the snow in again all over the pile of snow till it's really firm. Next put your sticks in the pile of snow so they are spread out and they stick out a little. Make sure they are placed all around the pile of snow. After all that work take a break until the snow crystallizes. Drinking hot chocolate at this part is a good idea. After about 15-20 minutes you should go back and test the snow by standing on it. If you can do so then pick a spot for an entrance. If not wait a while longer. Then starting digging at the spot of the entrance so you have a little hole. Then using your shovel dig put the inside of the pile of snow. If you run into a stick don't go any farther.
When you're done after all that take out your sticks and go outside. If you think you are fancy you can add some snow to the inside for a place to sit. Finally well done! Your igloo is done and you can enjoy it by drinking hot cocoa inside by just staying warm. Now you are able to take it one step farther by putting a chimney on it or something that desire. Have fun in your igloo!
