Home Made Ice Lace Candles

Create a lovely lace looking candle using simple items found around the house. These make a great gift item.

Homemade candles are an easy and inexpensive gift. This style makes an unusual candle that makes it a bit dressier to give and use.

PARTS

  • Wax, I use old style paraffin from the grocery store or you can get it at a craft store. This can also be a great way to recycle wax from other candles.
  • Wick, this you can also buy or wax up cotton twine until it is stiff
  • Crushed ice
  • Yogurt cups, I rinse out cups after use and save them for candle molds
  • Non-stick spray
  • Old crayons, (Colorant)
  • Skewers or Popsicle sticks
  • Double boiler or coffee can and a pot big enough to set it in

Making the candle

To prep the molds, yogurt cups, spray the inside with a non-stick spray. Cut wick a few inches longer than the cup and attach to the center of your skewer or Popsicle stick. Place on top of cup so the stick holds the wick to the center of cup.

Melt you wax in a double boiler, or can set in center of larger pot with a couple inches of water in bottom. When the wax is melted stir in a couple of broken pieces of crayon in the color of your choice. Stir completely to disperse color. When your wax is melted, fill your cups with crushed ice; pour the hot wax over the ice. Let the wax harden a little then start to pour off the welted water. There will be small pockets of water in the candle as it cures. When it is completely hard remove from cup by turning it upside down and putting pressure in the bottom of the cup. If it sticks run a little hot water over the outside of the cup to loosen. After the candle is out of the mold let set on paper towels to catch all the remaining liquid.

It is best to let the candle rest at least a week before use. The voids caused by the ice give the candle a great lacy look and as the wick burns down you get great light through the sides. To give as gifts, wrap in colored cellophane or a lacy piece of fabric gather and tied with a bow.

These have become a central part of my Christmas gift basket and friends and family have asked for more.

Thanks, I had seen these but could never figure out how to make that pretty lacy pattern.
