What Romans Ate: A Menu For a Restaurant

What did Romans eat? Find out by looking on the menu that my friend and I made up. (It's pretty accurate). Some parts are in Latin, but we put translations.

The Taste of Rome: An Italian Restaurant

Appetizers:

  1. Vegetable and Fruit Medley

An array of vegetables and fruit including asparagus, lettuce, broccoli, grapes, pears, and peaches on a platter with spices to add flavor.
  2. Bread and Cheese

Fresh house bread cut to perfection in slices of ten per dish. Also includes, sliced block cheese. Comes with a side of olive oil and spices for dipping.
  3. Create Your Own

Choose from any of our vegetables, fruits, nuts, or flowers and create your own appetizer. You may also include olive oil and spices along with cheese.

Main Course:

  1. Seaside Soup

Consists of boiled shrimp, crab, and oyster. Served hot in a bread bowl with a side of the house bread.
  2. Meat Entree

This entree dish includes roasted sliced ham, sliced bacon, chicken breasts, and goat meat. Served with a slice of toasted house bread, a violet, and roasted almonds.
  3. Dinner Medley

Includes a roasted ham showered with almonds, chestnuts, and an array of spices with a side of broccoli and cheese casserole. Served with toasted house bread with olive oil and spices.

Desserts:

  1. Tart Tarts

Choose from our selection of apple, pear, cherry, or pomegranate for a wonderfully baked tart straight from the oven. Served hot with almonds.
  2. Plum Cake

A deliciously baked cake made from the plums of the plum tree. Within the cake, are chestnuts and lilies. Glazed with a light grape wine.
  3. Grapes, Cheese, and Wine

Sliced grapes lay out on a platter with a variety of cubed cheeses. Served with wine.

* House Bread- Toasted Cheese and Garlic Bread

* Drinks include wine and fresh spring water.

Remember: Asses and Sestertius were Rome's basic unit of money. Asses were about $1 and a Sestertius being $5. Sestertius were used by the upper classed while Asses were used by the poor.
