Using Herbs Instead of Salt

Need to cut back on your salt intake? Try these suggestions to replace salt with herbs.

The presence of salt in our diets is linked to high blood pressure. And we are often told to reduce or eliminate salt from our diets. So what do you do about salt? Get it out of your life by replacing the salt in cooking with herb blends. With the liveliness that herbs can bring to foods, your taste buds won’t cry our for salt.

Try combining equal parts of dried basil and oregano and dried ground lemon zest in a salt shaker. Mix well and add a teaspoon or two of raw rice to keep the mixture from caking. Sprinkle on green beans or broccoli, or use in place of salt in marinades and salad dressing.

Another good combination is ground celery seed, ground cumin seed, dried sage, and dried marjoram. Or fill a pepper mill with whole allspice, coriander seed, and white and black peppercorns. Keep it handy and grind it over food whenever you have a salt craving. The mixture is especially tasty on plain popcorn.

So throw away that salt shaker and get cooking with herb blends. You won’t miss the salt once you start tasting the delicious blends and combinations that you can make with herbs.
