Organic Foods vs. Regular Foods

Most of you are probably familiar with both organic foods and non-organic foods.

For example, you probably know this because you go shopping in supermarkets and you pass by the vegetable section to go buy some tomatoes, or maybe you go to the dairy section to go buy milk. Most likely, you buy the organic tomatoes or the organic milk just because you hear it's good or it's popular and everyone purchases it. In fact, some could even buy non-organic tomatoes or the non-organic milk without knowing its dangers. Do you know which one is better? Find out more by exploring this web site.

Although non-organic foods are much cheaper and there are more farms that are non-organic than organic farms, many still believe that organic foods have a positive effect on everyone and the environment. This is because organic foods are extremely healthy, it takes great care of the farms, and the sales of organic foods is amazing.

First of all, organic foods are more healthy than non-organic foods. Organic foods are foods that are grown without the assistance of artificial fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides (treatment from avoiding insects), artificial coloring or flavoring, hormones, or waste obtained from sewers or humans. Scientists studied that organic foods have more vitamins (such as vitamin C), enzymes, calcium, minerals, trace minerals, and antioxidant phytochemicals than non-organic foods. Phytochemicals are chemicals antioxidants that have to do with the plant's protective system. There are 50% more vitamins, minerals, and calcium in fresh organic produce than non-organic food. In fact, if a person eats non-organic foods instead, taking in all those pesticides can give the person problems and symptoms such as memory problems, headaches, birth defects, lack of energy, depression, and can even give a person cancer! At the bottom of this paragraph, there is a graph that shows the "Top 10 Foods Contaminated with Persistent Toxic Chemicals". It shows that foods such as butter, cantaloupes, cucumbers/pickles, meatloaf, peanuts, popcorn, radishes, spinach, summer squash, and winter squash had been contaminated with chemicals such as chlordane, DDE, DDT, dieldrin, dioxin, endrin, heptachlor, hexachlorobenzene, and toxophene. Plus, scientists have discovered that there are 20 to 30 poisons on a skin of an average non-organic apple!

Then, growing organic food on farms is great for the farm itself. In the first paragraph, it is mentioned that organic produce is made without the help of pesticides and other materials that can do harm to the body. Organic produces are great for the farmland because using less or no pesticides on farmland will decrease the amount of soil and water pollution. This will keep the soil clean so the soil can last for a long period of time. Decreasing water pollution will keep the water clean so the water can be reused to water plants over and over. Because of conventional farming, 3 billion tons of soil are eroded every year on non-organic farms. 3 billion tons is a lot of soil! In fact, only 0.5% of all farms are organic farms. The other 99.5% are non-organic farms, which all the 3 billion tons of eroded soil come from. According to scientists, many believe that organic farms are more energy efficient than non-organic farms.

Last but not least, the sales of organic foods are spectacular. While the sales of non-organic foods go up by 2% to 3% every year, the sales of organic foods have risen up to 17% to 20% annually! That sentence shows how how dynamic the sales of organic foods are and how it rose so quickly. The Food Marketing Institute claims that "more than half of Americans now buy organic foods once per month". Did you know that half of all the sales of organic cheese and yogurt and two-thirds of all sales of organic milk and cream are sold through conventional supermarkets? When packaging organic foods, the container also has to be earth friendly when possible. For example, a person might package a bunch of strawberries in a plastic container that uses 30% less plastic than the leading non-organic strawberry company. Foods that are 70% organic will have a sign that will read "Made of Organic Ingredients". Foods will have a sign that says "USDA organic" if at least 95% of the weight is organic. If the food is 100% organic, there will be a sign that will say "100% organic". It could include a small "USDA Organic" sign, too. One problem that most shoppers will have a problem with while shopping in the supermarket is about the price. Organic foods are more costly than non-organic foods, so people are confused over which food to purchase. But many shoppers still prefer organic foods over non-organic foods. It is worth the price. Organic foods are more expensive than non-organic foods because it had taken more labor to prepare the food or it is because the food is healthy to the environment.

Organic foods only have a few negative points. One is that organic foods are considered a lot more expensive than non-organic foods. For example, organic foods tend to be 10% to 30% more expensive than regular foods. This will make families want to save some money and buy non-organic foods. Plus, regular foods are 20% more productive than organic foods.

All in all, these are some reasons why most shoppers prefer to buy organic foods over non-organic foods. It is because of the healthiness to your body, healthy to farmland, and the sales of organic food is persuading others to buy organic foods. So help the Earth and keep it clean and healthy by buying organic products!
