What could be more delicious on a Saturday morning than a steaming hot cup of fresh brewed coffee? Except maybe a heaping spoonful of sweet chocolate. The good news is you can combine your love of these two treats by making chocolate spoons for your coffee. Not only are chocolate spoons a nice indulgence for your morning coffee, they also make great, last-minute gifts for almost any occasion. Here's how to make chocolate spoons for coffee:
Buy Your Supplies
To make chocolate spoons, you'll need to purchase coating chocolate to cover the spoons. This can be found at candy making supply stores and some craft stores. Baker's chocolate won't work since it has cocoa butter which can affect the quality of the final product. Melting chocolate usually comes in the form of small wafers. You'll also need a double boiler set up to melt the chocolate as well as spoons to coat and a roll of waxed paper.
Melt the Chocolate
Start by heating water in a pan and remove it from the stove once it's simmering. Now put on the top pan of your double broiler or place a smaller pan above the simmering water. Be sure the upper pan isn't touching the water in the lower pan. Add your coating chocolate to the upper pan and allow it to melt while stirring constantly. Allow the chocolate to melt completely. A microwave can also be used but this can be tricky since chocolate tends to heat very quickly in a microwave. Use a low setting and stop the microwave frequently to stir the melting chocolate.
Dip Your Spoons
Once your chocolate is completely melted, dip the bowl of your spoon carefully into the chocolate. Lightly tap the spoon against the pot to remove any excess chocolate. Lay the completed spoon onto a layer of waxed paper. Once the chocolate on the spoons have set, place the spoons in the freezer for ten minutes to further harden and set them. Your spoons are now ready to use or give as gifts.
Once you know how to make a basic chocolate spoon, you can create variations on the basic chocolate spoon by creating a marbled effect using white and dark chocolate and even create designs by applying white chocolate over dark chocolate. Try sprinkling rock candy, crushed coconut, toffee bits, nuts, or crushed peppermint candy on the chocolate while it's still warm.
When you're pleased with the quality of your chocolate spoons, wrap them in plastic and tie them with a bow to make a gift for someone special. You can even place them in a coffee mug to give as an inexpensive birthday gift. Don't forget to save some for your own morning coffee!
