Enjoy the Health Benefits of Homemade Salsa

Salsa is a good accompaniment to Mexican food and other cuisines, and it tastes great.

Homemade salsa is so quick and easy to prepare once you have the ingredients. But how does it compare with shop bought brands of salsa? Read on to find out how to enjoy the many benefits of homemade salsa.

Choice of Seasonings

If you are in the habit of buying a ready made jar of salsa you will not have much choice of seasonings as the salsa will already be seasoned. But if you make your own salsa, you can control the type and amount of herbs you use, whether or not you should add salt and you can even add black or red pepper flakes to the homemade salsa. Traditional salsa contains coriander as the main herb of choice. But if you are not keen on coriander, substitute it for mint, oregano, thyme or some other herb that you like.

Fresh Tomatoes

Where would the humble salsa be without a good crop of tasty tomatoes? If you grow your own, then you can pick some fragrant tomatoes straight from your garden. The taste of fresh tomatoes is amazing and cannot be matched by tomatoes that have been sitting in the produce section of a supermarket for a week or more.

Jalapenos

Whether you buy a mild or hot brand of shop bought salsa, the one thing that you will always find is the addition of jalapenos to the salsa. But what if you do not like the taste of jalapenos? The benefit of making your own salsa is that you do not have to add jalapenos to your salsa. It can be as mild or as hot as you like.

Lemon/Lime/Vinegar

Salsa tastes great with a generous amount of lime juice sprinkled over the top. But if you are out of limes or you would prefer to use something else, you can do so. Lemons and vinegar are a very good substitute for limes when making homemade salsa.

Homemade salsa is very versatile. It can have any number of seasonings, and can be tailored to individual taste. Homemade salsa can also be very healthy if prepared properly. For example, if you suffer from high blood pressure that does not mean to say you have to give up salsa. Just make your own salsa and concentrate more on other seasonings and use extra lemon or lime juice so that you do not end up missing the saltiness of ready made salsas.
