The following tips should help you to make sure your cookies arrive just right for eating.
Choose soft cookies for mailing. They are better travelers than those that are crisp and breakable. Fruit filled drips, bar cookies, or brownies pack easily and stand up well in transit. Avoid frostings and filings that become sticky at room temperature.
A strong cardboard box or metal container is essential. Line the box with waxed paper or foil and put a cushion of crumpled newspaper, waxed or plastic wrap on the bottom. Popcorn or puffed cereal should be avoided as packing materials because they sometimes attract various insects.
Wrap cookies individually or in pairs back to back using clear plastic wrap. Pack the wrapped cookies snugly in rows. Cover each layer with a cushion of crushed waxed paper or paper towels. Bar cookies baked in foil pans can be sent without removing from the pan. Be sure to allow enough space at the tops of the packing box or container for a repeat of the insulation layer at the bottom.
Pack metal container, if used, into a heavy cardboard carton using crushed newspaper or confetti to hold securely. Tape the box shut and tie securely. Print the address on the box so that if the wrappings come loose, the address will not be destroyed. Wrap in heavy paper, address package, and label it, “Fragile, Handle with Care.”
Then send your cookies to all of your family and friends so that they can enjoy the delicious pleasure of your homemade cookies.
