On the bar stool this week we have an Indian pale ale ironically named “Gen. Sherman IPA”, brewed and bottled by “Sequoia Brewing Company”, based in Gilroy, California. The alcohol content is 7.5 by volume. This brewer is unique in that they donate one-dollar towards the preservation of the Southern Sierras for every case sold. So, we bought a case!
Taste
At first taste, some of us at “The Beer Gardens” were a bit put off by the IPA's sweet taste. I did not think I would be able to follow a bottle with a bottle; however, I didn't want my donated dollar to mean nothing, so I soldiered forth and managed to drink three. The taste is a bit sweet, or wheaty, which ever you prefer to hear, but many I know enjoy this quality. Although, after drinking the first bottle, it was easier to drink the next two, as is usually the case with alcohol. If you are seeking a beer with a good first bottle taste, we do not recommend this beer. You must drink a second bottle to really enjoy its punch. On the other hand, if your seeking a unique tasting brew with flavor and kick, you may want to pick a case up, and feel good about saving a tree with your donated dollar!
Aroma
The aroma of the Gen. Sherman is great. If only its taste and smell were more evenly matched!
Color and Packaging
The color of the Gen. Sherman is a light-medium brown comparable to a Michelob Porter, or a dark walnut shell. Yes…a walnut shell! The bottling and packaging of the Gen. Sherman is great. Its still easy to hold after three or four are empty, and there isn't much of a fuss with the bottle cap, though with any respectable beer, you will need a bottle opener! I do not recommend pouring this ale into a cup or mug due to its tendency to create a froth that does not disappear quickly, and may make drinking uncomfortable. If you insist, freeze the mug prior to pouring the ale. Also, it is a fact that nose grease has mild antifoaming properties and can be used to break down a high head on a freshly poured beer. Wipe your nose with one finger and stir the foam, the foam will dissipate quickly, and your friends will be amazed with your knowledge!
Overall
“The Beer Gardens” rated the Gen. Sherman IPA on a scale of 1 - 5. Five being the best possible score. The over all score is a 3.5
