Six Environmentally Friendly Money Savers

If you are looking for green ways to save money at home, check out these six great products. They are easy to install and they will save you money.

While there are many environmentally products on the market, it is often difficult to find ones that are effective and inexpensive. When you do find a quality product, it can be expensive to install. Listed here are six inexpensive and easy to install products that are decently priced and good for the environment.

  1. Water Heater Insulation Blanket

For $25 at your local home improvement store, you can purchase a water heater blanket and save money on your gas or electric bill. It takes only a few minutes to wrap around your water heater and keeps the hot water inside warmer for longer, while also making the need to heat the water less often.
  2. Heat Control Window Film

Instead of spending $5,000 to replace your homes windows, buy heat control window film instead. This thin film acts as a barrier to keep the heat and cold on opposite sides of the window. A roll of 15' costs as little as $30 at your local home improvement store, and it can cover several windows. In half an hour, you can adhere the insulating film to your windows and instantly begin saving on your heating and cooling bills.
  3. Thermal Barrier Fabric

Thermal Barrier Fabric is a lightweight fabric weaved with a high-density polyethylene plastic and coated with a thin reflective metallic surface. In the winter, hang this see-through product inside your windows and let the sun heat it to warm your room for free. Hang it outside your window in the summer and it will deflect the heat away from the window keeping your interior cooler. This fabric can be cut to fit many windows and it only costs $90 for a 7'x8' panel at Clear Dome Solar.
  4. Solar-Powered Security Motion Light

A solar-powered security motion light is a great investment for any home. For as low as $80 at Wal-Mart, you can add motion-sensing security to your home without adding to your electric bill. Simply place the small solar panel in line with the sun, and paying to light your entryways will be a thing of the past.
  5. Motion-Sensing Light Socket

If you don't have the know-how to install a motion sensing light switch, consider getting a motion sensing light socket instead. You simply screw this money-saving gadget into a light socket and put any light bulb in the other, and soon your lights will always shut themselves off when not needed. It's a great option for anyone with children, and costs as little as $23 at Amazon.
  6. Solar-Powered Yard Stakes

If you are looking to create beautiful landscaping with a nighttime atmosphere, check out Collections Etc. For as little as $20, you can get five solar powered yard stakes that can be used to light your walkways and garden while providing mood lighting. Also check out their solar powered fountain pumps and pool lights and you can create incredible landscaping without accruing adding to your utility bill.

Great tips, Erica. I just talked my husband into getting a thermal blanket for our water heater.

Usually "environmentally friendly" and "inexpensive" do not go hand in hand, until this article! Great research and well written.

Here's two more. If you have a modern dishwasher, you dont need to put soap in it. Fill your dishwasher, close the soap trapdoor, and run it on normal cycle. I guarantee you will notice no difference in the end result. Now if you had crab for dinner, you might want to soap up. Otherwise you will not be able to tell the difference . Why do you close the soap door ? So that nobody else in the house knows you dint use soap, silly !
Second tip. Liquid Laundry Detergent. There's an extra loads-worth left in the container that you cannot get out unless you remove the carefully designed pouring spout.Pliers or a sharp knife(Careful!) will do the trick for you.Better in your washer than in the landfill !
