Sea-Monkeys, (Artemia NYOS), are a unique species of brine shrimp. As eggs coated in a special man-made film, they live in a state of suspended animation until in contact with water. The eggs are purchased in a kit which also includes Sea-Monkey Food, Sea-Monkey Water Purifier, and an entertaining aquarium displaying a kid-friendly theme. The more common aquarium themes are The Beach, The Moon, and The City. At a cost of about ten dollars, Sea-Monkey kits are easily purchased at retail stores, and of course the official Sea-Monkey website. Once at home with Sea-Monkeys in hand, the Sea-Monkey enthusiast is given a detailed set of instructions.
These instructions call for the consumer to fill the aquarium with bottled water, mix in the water purifier, wait one day, pour the eggs into the water, wait five days, and then begin feeding. Some people are able to see the tiny shrimp right after adding the eggs, but it takes up to a month before the Sea-Monkeys are easily visible. There are many other additives offered by the Sea-Monkey brand such as vitamins, treats, aphrodisiacs, and super-growth food. If properly cared for and loved, these tiny “monkeys” can survive for up to two years, which also happens to be the life of the warranty, and can make for a very entertaining pet and conversation starter.
