Plumbing Tips: What Not to Flush Down

Don't flush it down, unless you want to hire a plumber.

Here is a list of things that should never go down the drain to avoid stoppages. If you can remember this, it will be very rare that you need a snake.

For a Garbage Disposal

When talking about a garbage disposal, rice, cooked fish, small wooden ice cream spoons, broken glass, popsicle sticks and watermelon seeds. Bacon grease, oil and fat drippings will plug the drain when they go down. Wipe these with paper towels and throw away.

The seeds and broken glass will jam the disposal. The cooked fish and rice will plug up the drain in the kitchen. It is best not to use the disposal for more than a small portion of food.

For a Bathroom

You really don't want to flush down any Q-tips, bobby pins, paper towels, children's toys like Hotwheel cars or other small toys that will fit in the palm of your hand. Children often toss things into the toilet.

Other items not to go down the throne are sanitary feminine napkins of any kind or too much paper. If you use these guidelines, the drains are sure to stay clear!
