Is Your Bottled Water Eco-Friendly?

More than 40% of bottled water originates from the ordinary tap water supply. Is it really worth the level of pollution it creates? Is your favourite brand eco friendly?

During 2006 an estimated 50 billions gallons of bottled water were consumed. This increase of 60% over and above the 2001 level is still set to rise again by the end of 2007. Only a very small proportion of this bottled water is used in areas where there is no clean water supply. The main reason for these high figures is "fashion" in the industrial areas of the world.

Bottled water costs more than 12,000 times the price of ordinary tap water. In fact it costs more than oil per litre. Yet, many people pay that price believing that it is somehow healthier, or more trendy to be seen drinking it.

Production of this bottled water uses large amounts of fossil fuels, but the real problem is the carbon emissions produced by the production of the polyethylene based bottles which are discarded in their millions. Globally, almost 3million tons of plastic per year is used to produce bottles for water and most of these never get recycled.

Many people think that bottled water is somehow healthier but more than forty percent of bottled water brands start life as tap water. Small amounts of trace elements and minerals are added to this tap water and it suddenly costs 12,000 times more.

Bottled water is not necessary in the developed world where we can get high quality drinking water from the tap. Buying it wastes your money and helps to create higher levels of environmental pollution.

There may be times when purchasing this product is necessary and useful, especially when travelling but even then it is possible to cut down on the number of bottle purchased by refilling the bottles from the tap, or water filter, and using them again.

Louie, this is obviously a well researched article. I agree with your conclusion totally. I have never been a fan of bottled water. My tap water is safe to drink but I've invested in a good jug which filters my water anyway. Change the filter every 4-5 weeks and you have pure clean water every time.

Thanks for the information. I remember reading before that bottled water isn't really healthier than tap water.

Very good suggestion in using tap water, Louie.

Dear Louie,

Thank you for your thoughtful, well written piece. I have wondered much about different types of bottled water. I am still conducting my own research.

Best wishes.

Sincerely,

-Liane Schmidt.

Some of the Spring Waters are better than tap water but in general, it was a money making scheme that made millions! I like to use a water filter but tap water fills the gap too.

Good information presented at such a perfect time. I am hearing more about some bottled water not being all that is advertised. I agree... a scheme making millions, what I don't get is why we/including myself buy into it all. Good alternative ideas.

It is important to know such information. We tend to take bottle water for granted, but not all of them are really safe.

I agree with you. We should reduce purchasing bottled drinks as they pollute our environment. Thank you for the info.

Exactly. Well said. This is one way or tips of becoming environmental friendly. A great way to start using the tap water. Thanks for the brilliant idea. Take care. Heart

This is in the US right? It may be different in the UK.

I don't see a problem in buying bottled water or using tap water.

I live in the UK. My teacher once said the water in London is like 4 times dirtier than the water in Manchester.

I'm from UK too, Kris, this refers to UK and US, plus many other developed countries throughout the world.
